Comic Timing Extra Point Episode 17: Convention Catch-Up – New York Comic Con 2023 and AnimeNYC 2022

And there came a time when Ian finally found the opportunity to release recordings made at recent conventions. That time is indeed today! Depending on your definition of recent, that is. First, we flash back to last year’s Anime NYC, just in time for this year’s Anime NYC, as Ian interviews manga translator for books such as Cat + Gamer and Marvel’s Demon Wars, writer and beer buddy, Zack Davisson, as well as artist Robert Wilson IV from Oni Press’ Heartthrob, Vault’s Barbaric: The Harvest Blades, Bitch Planet issue 3, and a bunch of posters for bands such as Metallica and Weird Al! We then flash forward to New York Comic Con 2023, as Ian runs through his experiences at the convention, followed by convo on the floor with Donovan Morgan Grant and artist and creator extraordinaire, Mr. Jamal Igle. This includes discussion of The Harvey Awards, the existence of Death Note: The Musical, attending the Steve Ditko panel on a whim, and so much more.

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 16: Zack Snyder’s WandaVision ’84

Dance along with a brand new Extra Point! Ian journeys back to Brooklyn to record this one in person with Kris, as they delve into a bevy of topics that have been on their minds for months. This includes thoughts and opinions on Wonder Woman 1984 and whether or not it lived up to expectations (or expectations were too high), Zack Snyder’s choice to keep the IMAX aspect ratio for his Justice League in a world of 16:9 screens, and we go spoilery on episodes 1-6 on WandaVision and make wild speculations on where the series is goin (some of which were already proven inaccurate by episode 7 but that’s half the fun of speculation).

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 13: Consolidating Comics with F.O.R.C.E.

FORCE

It’s been a while, but we’re back in style! Yes, that is a Chipmunks quote. Anyway, we’re up to lucky number 13 on the Comic Timing Extra Point. This episode, Ian runs solo for the first half, as he discusses selling off a bunch of his comic collection at Wild Pig Comics in Kenilworth, New Jersey two weeks back. Much thanks to Wild Pig’s owner, the talented Chris Eberle of Comic Geek Speak, for making that magic happen! There’s also some discussion of the transition from physical copies to going mostly digital, manga scanlations and why you should either wait for official release or hit the library over turning to the dark side of the Internet, and then a quick review of Southern Bastards Volume 1 by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour.

After that, we transition to the one and only interview Ian conducted at the 2015 edition of New York Comic Con, with the one and only Shawn Pryor. Shawn discusses what it’s like to return to New York City after a twenty year hiatus, what’s next in store for Cash & Carrie post-Kickstarter, and his newest miniseries coming out of Action Lab Entertainment in 2016, F.O.R.C.E. It ain’t Super Pro, yo!

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 12: Fan Films and Power Rangers

HipHopKido

Earlier this week, producer Adi Shankar and director Joseph Kahn put their 15 minute fan film Power/Rangers on the web. Three days later, the film has been taken off of both YouTube and Vimeo due to copyright claims by Saban Brands and its lawyers. You can still find the movie on Facebook, of which Shankar thanks for not bending to the copyright claim.

Ian is joined by The Black Box’s Shawn Pryor and Ignorant BlissJulian Lytle for this Extra Point to discuss the star-studded short in full (James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff, seriously!), what some of the original Rangers thought about the short, along with where we think the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot may go as a film, what fan films mean to the industry as a whole, what it takes to make a mature film versus a mature content film, and a whole lot more where that came from!

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 11: Gotham and Constantine

gotham
Time for a timely Extra Point! Ian is joined by Kris as they give a spoiler-filled review of both FOX’s Gotham and NBC’s Constantine pilot. As usual, we go over what worked and what needs improvement, the characters of both series and where they begin their journey, how the fracturing of DC’s television properties could wind up hurting more than helping in the long run, the pain of forcing references to the comics into a show *WINK*, Batman’s dead parents, and how Gotham is a lot more Smallville than it is Arrow. Oh, and Kris has quick rant about Star Wars: Scoundrels, by Timothy Zahn.

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 10: RIP Jamie D

RIP Jamie D

Earlier today, the comic book podcasting community lost one of its founding fathers, and friendliest faces. Jamie Dallessandro of Comic Geek Speak, known to most simply as Jamie D, passed away due to complications from his longstanding battle with cancer. Jamie was a shining beacon of positivity for the community as a whole, and anyone who has listened to him, met him, or considered him to be a friend, will miss him dearly. I sure will.

This episode has my farewells to Jamie, as well as some extra audio that was recorded during Episode 150, and re-airing of a portion of Episode 137, which was recorded during Baltimore Comic Con with Shane, Brian “Pants” Christman, and Jamie.

Here’s to you, Shiznit Pimp. We will never forget the part your played in our lives, no matter how small or large it may have been. Uniting the world’s mightiest heroes, forevermore.

Comic Timing Extra Point – Episode 9

ScarletWitch

Extra Point time! Kris and I go over the Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe TV Special that aired this past Tuesday on ABC. We discuss how this special stood out from the typical promotional material included on DVDs and whatnot, what was revealed about Marvel Studios’ past and future, the strengths and shortcomings that come with having a team movies like The Avengers, meandering into old school X-Men crossovers, and more. A good solid thirty minutes of content! Oh, and here’s a direct link to the Guess Who? research video Kris brought up near the end of the show. Enjoy!
