There’s peanut butter in my chocolate. There’s chocolate in my peanut butter. And together it tastes like a podcast crossover…Comic Talk style! Chris and Ian are joined by the Comic Timing Podcast’s co-host Brent Kossina, regular rotating guest Donovan Morgan Grant, and last but not least, the CGS return of the one and only artistic juggernaut, Jamal Igle! The combined crew delves deep into DC Comics recent layoffs and cancellations, its new interim Editors in Chiefs, the impending return of Milestone Comics, and thoughts on what may come next for the publisher as all of these changes begin to settle in. We also discuss the Stargirl Season One Finale (spoilers), the fate of the DC Universe app and its originals, Scott Snyder’s new Kickstarter and Image Imprint, Kirkman and Samnee’s Fire Power, Umbrella Academy (both the Netflix series and comic), Doom Patrol Season 2, Bendis’ Superman, Nick Spencer’s Amazing Spider-Man, Immortal Hulk, the end of Joshua Williamson’s Flash, Birthright from Image Comics, The Old Guard, and more. And of course, learn more about the upcoming return of Tom Peyer and Jamal Igle’s The Wrong Earth: Night and Day! (2:18:48)
Our second episode of the Social Distancing Era is now out, as Ian, Brent, Brandon and Kris are joined by longtime friend of the show, and artist extraordinaire, Jamal Igle! Jamal brings his wealth of knowledge on the comics industry to the table here, as the crew discuss the current state of things, including changes in distribution, the rise of digital, Lunar Distributors and UCS Distributors and how much of a challenge they actually are for Diamond, what readership numbers and sales revenue really looks like in today’s world, and a whole lot more. And oh, we also discuss pasta extraordinaire, and soon to be Batman Robert Pattinson, and his choice to not work out while quarantined. That too.
Miss us? We sure did miss you! In this time of uncertainly, doubt and worry, we here at Comic Timing do our best to take your mind off of things. Brent, Ian, Donovan, Brandon and Raph gather to discuss a wide range of topics, from DC’s removal of Dan Didio to convention cancellations due to the outbreak and the future of conventions, from HBO’s Watchmen to Doomsday Clock, from CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and a whole lot more. Strap in for nearly three hours of distraction, and please, wash your hands, social distance, and stay the heck home people!
Brent and Jim are back to talk all the games of 2019! Brent hasn’t played many, but our expert Jim Efantis has played a BUNCH. Listen to them talk best, worst, and sequels we didn’t need!
Comic Timing has hit 200 episodes! Most DC and Marvel comics don’t hit 200 issues thanks to reboots, but there are NO reboots here! Just Ian and Brent, one on one, mano y mano in sunny Florida! Listen to Ian and Brent reflect on 200 episodes and everyone who has taken part of it! Thank you to all the listeners and contributors!
We’re back, baby! For the first time in a few months, the crew gathers together to discuss the latest movie out of DC Comics, Joker. But lo, this movie is not all fun and games, and neither is this review. Join Kris, Raph, Brent and Ian as we dissect the film, and try and understand just what exactly Todd Phillips was trying to accomplish with this piece of cinema. Does it live up to the awards hype, or does this particular joke fall flat? Where does Joaquin Phoenix rank on the long list of live action and animated Jokers we’ve experienced over the years? Does Robert De Niro make a convincing Johnny Carson stand-in? Listen in to find out!
We will be back sooner than later with more inane ramblings, with hopefully much less time in between episodes this time around. Until then, thanks for listening, and we’ll catch you next time for EPISODE 200 BABY!!!
Just under the June wire, a new episode of Comic Timing hits the Internet! This time, Ian, Brent,m Brandon and Donovan go nose deep into a variety of topics, ranging from the Game of Thrones finale to Dark Phoenix, DC’s announcements related to the Legion of Super-Heroes, Wally West, and the JSA, the DC Universe streaming app, Tom King’s Batman, where the MCU may be headed in Phase Four, and Avengers: Endgame returning to theaters. Plus, other stuff!
Episode 197 of Comic Timing is here, and it’s magical! Listen in as Raph, Ian, Brent, Donovan and Brandon go in depth on their thoughts on the recently released Shazam movie, plus a bevy of other topics and discussions. Those include Donovan’s trip to Bowling Green University for their Batman in Popular Culture Conference, thoughts on Gotham’s final season, Heroes in Crisis, Justice League vs The Fatal Five, and a bunch of other things. Spend some time with the boys, and next episode we’ll give you ENDGAME!!!
Hear Raph, Brent, Kris and Ian get a bit punchy, as it’s time to review Marvel Studio’s latest cinema offering: Captain Marvel! Was Brie Larson able to make her stamp on the well established MCU, or did things fall flat? Depends on who in the cast you ask; hint, Brent’s the least convinced. There are plenty of nicks to pick and some genuine grievances over plot, execution, and call signs, as well as thoughts on bright spots and discussion on plot twists, but do listen in to hear the full story. Spoilers abound, as usual, so wait until after you’ve seen the film to check this episode out, unless you don’t mind knowing everything beforehand.
And please make sure to head over to Kickstarter and check out Masked Prejudice – A Superhero Anthology for Social Justice, and anthology Raph contributed a story to! The campaign still has about a month to go, so do contribute to making this a reality if you can. In other Kickstarter news, Kwanza Osajyefo and Jamal Igle have lauched the follow-up six issue miniseries to the critically acclaimed BLACK, entitled WHITE. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for listening, and we’ll catch you all next time!
Episode 195 of Comic Timing finally hits the stands, as Ian, Raph, and Kris gather together to discuss the ever-changing world of comic shops. This entire conversation was spurred on by the closing of one of New York City’s oldest shops, St. Marks Comics. The store was beloved by some, and not so much by others. We discuss why this was the case, what it takes to run a comic shop in this day and age, and how stores can adapt and grow to welcome in customers for years to come, and how the comics industry can do the same, including the 100-page giants that are now no longer Walmart exclusives. Plus, some talk on how comic shops in America can take some cues from what shops do overseas.
And please, if you have any funds to spare, do throw a couple of bucks Raph’s way. He has a GoFundMe set up as he awaits disability, as he is currently dealing with regular kidney dialysis and can only do so much on a day to day basis. Any little bit helps keep Raph rolling on a regular basis.
We hope to post a bit more regularly in the coming months, so until next time, read some good stuff!
